DIY Lotion with Essential Oils
Have you ever tried making your own lotion? Believe it or not it's really easy and you won't miss your chemical filled store bought lotion at all. In fact you will find that you don't need to use it very often to have fabulous skin.
I have never really been a lotion person. I have really dry skin but never liked putting lotion on. I have done a lot of research, did some testing, and have finally come up with a lotion that I love. You CAN do this!
This All Natural Homemade Lotion is easy to make.
What you will need:
Small jar of some sort for melting ingredients
Small sauce pan
Wooden spoon for mixing
1/2 cup Almond oil (you can substitute this for Olive Oil or your other favorite carrier oil)
1/4 cup coconut oil (you can substitute this for Shea Butter or Cocoa Butter)
1/4 cup Beeswax (add about an 1/8 of a cup if you want to use the lotion with a pump)
1 tsp Meadowfoam Carrier oil (you can substitute this for Vitamin E oil)
20-60 drops of your favorite essential oil
Jar for storing the lotion
Directions:
Add all ingredients (except essential oils) to your jar.
Add a small amount of water to your sauce pan and put on medium heat.
Put the jar in the sauce pan and mix the ingredients while melting.
Once melted add the essential oils. I added 25 drops at first and wanted it stronger. I ended up adding about 50 drops of essential oil. This was the perfect amount for me.
If you use a stronger smelling carrier oil, you might even need to add more.
Add the melted lotion to a storage container and let cool. It will harden as it cools.
The thing I love most about my homemade lotion is that you can add whatever essential oil or carrier oils that you want to make it specific to your needs.
Here are some ideas for essential oils:
Fresh Flowers - Lavender, jasmine, ylang ylang
Citrus Breeze - Geranium, Grapefruit, lime
Anti Aging - Helichrysum Italicum, Neroli, Myrrh
Beach Girl - Patchouli, orange, ylang Ylang
Relax - Lavender, chamomile
Lovely Perfume - Geranium, lavender, rose
Here are some ideas for carrier oils:
Almond oil– for all skin types
Apricot Seed oil -for all skin types
Evening Primrose oil-to soothe skin and reduce signs of aging
Rosehip Carrier oil– To reduce the appearance of redness, to soothe skin and also to reduce signs of aging
Sunflower oil– very soothing for healthy skin
Macadamia Nut oil– great for the face and baby products
It did feel a little oily to me at first but then quickly went away and my skin feels fabulous. I could even feel the lotion after washing my hands a couple of times.
So, what do you think? Pretty easy right? You can do this!
NOTE: This lotion will have a good shelf life because of the Meadowfoam we added. Use within 6 months for best results.
